ATHLETICS

COACHING SCHOOL

THE TIMARU PROJECT

FURTHER PARTICULARS

Every effort is being made by the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Sub-Centre to make the coaching school, for which it has made arrangements, a success from every point of view. The school is to be held at Timaru during the Christmas holiday period, from December 26 to January 3, both dates inclusive, and is to be under the direction of the American coach, Mr. A. L. Fitch. Athletes wishing to combine a holiday with the opportunity of learning something more which will help them in their efforts to improve performances should find the school the ideal holiday place. Reference was made to the holding of the school recently, and since then further particulars of the arrangements have come to hand, together with the syllabus, which has been framed with a view to giving athletes the opportunity of taking an active part in the different sports meetings in the district. NOT HARD WORK. There is no intention of running the school to make it one of hard work. This point is stressed in a circular. It is hoped that the arrangements will make the athlete feel that he is going to Timaru for a really enjoyable holiday with the advantage and benefit of modern athletic coaching under an experienced and efficient coach. The syllabus has been drawn up so as to give the athletes who attend as much j time for real enjoyment as possible. Thq appointment system of coaching is to be used by Mr. Fitch, and under this athletes who will receive their coaching during the morning session will be free for the rest of the day, and those who attend the afternoon sessions will have the morning ffee. Every morning from 9 to 10 o'clock during the period of the school, Mr. Fitch will conduct lectures on modern training and coaching methods, and (by way of illustration he will use j moving pictures showing athletes in (action. The opportunity will be given ■for asking questions on any point. The schedule provides for a fulltime course of instruction in all track and field events, physical training, and "keep fit" work under Mr. Fitch's con trol and with the assistance of a num ber of New Zealand's leading athletes. All registered amateur athletes and senior secondary school athlete's are eligible to attend. The school will be domiciled in the Waimataitai Primary School buildings, which are stated to be excellently situated for surha purpose. Baths are just opposite, the Ashbury Park sports ground with its modern cinder trad; (the only one in !New Zealand) is only a minute from the school, and there are tennis courts nearby. ! Every effort is being made to keep the expense to the athletes as low as possible in order to bring the benefits within the reach of all. The first charge is a registration fee of £1 to

cover the full course of coaching and instruction, and it is planned to keep the charge for camp accommodation ■ down to approximately 8s a day. The full cost, it is stated, will not be more than £5. For athletes who come from a distance by rail or steamer it is stated that special rates can be ar ranged with the transport authorities. I Registrations may be made with the j secretary, Mr. A. A. Solomon, P.O. Box 132, Timaru, up to December 1 For the convenience of those who may find it difficult to make the necessary arrangements by that date, provision is made for late registration up to December 17, if accompanied by an additional fee of ss. Athletes are required to state whether they are seniors, juniors, or secondary school pupils, what events they desire coaching in, the date of th^ir arrivs-1 at Tin^aru, and whether they desire accommodation at the school.
