FOREST GLOW'S STEEPLES

The Lincoln Steeplechase saw some good jumping at a fast pace, but three of the seven starters were missing at the finish. Forest Glow, in improving the necessary point on his middle day's second in the Beaufort, completed >an excellent cross-country double for the Awapuni trainer L. Knapp and for :the. Awapuni horseman,J: W.. Mcv Dowell, who had been associated earlier in the day in the success of Tangled. Forest Glow, jumping splendidly, was in a good position all the way, never far from Cock o' the North and Shillelagh Wood, who saw to most of the pacemaking. . Seven -furlongs from home; when Cock o' the North began to tire, Irish Comet ran into second place, but Forest Glow passed the Aucklander at the kennels double. At this stage there was not much separating the first four, and Pahu was moving up. Then between the last two fences Shillelagh Wood was in distress, and Forest Glow, first over the last fence, came on along the outer rail to score by three lengths from Irish Comet. Forest Glow has. been a long time in coming back to form this winter, but he is very well now. The win was his first since he took the Winter Steeples at Ellerslie fourteen months ago. He races in the interests of Mrs. A. H. Marshall, of Marton, who bred him. His sire, Town Boy, is an unraced horse by Archiestown, the sire of Billy Boy, etc. Irish Comet • ran a characteristic race with a spurt in the middle stages of the last round, but he was outstayed by Forest Glow. His jumping was always excellent. Pahu, after a bad jump at the-first fence (Cutts's), gave his pest exhibition at the meeting and he was' running on as well as anything a handy third. Shillelagh Wood, who took charge with a mile and a half to go, tired badly. ■ The first to go out was Tudor, who broke down after six fences and was pulled up. Royal Limond ran off at the sod wall half a mile from home when well out of the contest. Cock o' the North dropped his rider when a beaten horse at the second last fence.
