MOSCOW TO U.S.A.

SOVIET SUCCESS

LANDING EAST OF LOS ANGELES

United Press Association —By Electric Tele* craph—Copyright. (Received July 15, 9.40 a.m.)', ' SAN FRANCISCO, July 14. The Soviet aviators who flew non* stop from Moscow via the North Pola landed 90 miles east of Los Angeles. The flyers landed in a cow pasture at San Jacinto, California, as a leaking petrol line was exhausting their fuel. They fought against fogs all the way; to California. They flew non-stop for approximately 6625 miles in 62 hours 6 minutes. They were unaware that a large army airport was only 20 miles from where they landed. Army planes immediately flew to the pasture, a guard was mounted over the plane, and the flyers were brought to the army field. Before the landing, an unsigned wireless message which was believed to be from the. flyers asked Los Angeles to send test signals. Unsigned SOS messages a few minutes later caused fears for the Soviet airmen until it was determined that the wavelength was not that of their plane.

The plane was then reported to ba over San Francisco. A message from the plane was broken of! in the middla of the sentence, and there was no word for three hours, whereupon tha Soviet Consul sent up a plane to mak* a search in the vicinity of Oakland.
