COLD & CHANGEABLE

IMPROVING SOON

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Moderate south-easterly to southerly -winds, freshening at times. Weather cold and changeable, with some showers, but improving tomorrow.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for tha ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate northerly winds at first in portions of the central districts of the North Island. But otherwise south-westerlies to southerlies will prevail. These will be moderate to strong about and to the north of Cook Strait, but they will decrease later and elsewhere will be light to moderate in force. The weather will be changeable, with showers in most districts. There will be an improvement soon, however, in. the western and southern districts of the South Island, and a more general improvement is probable by tomorrow. Temperatures will be cold with some sharp frosts tonight in the South Island.

By this morning the northerly depression had moved eastward of the North Island, but since last night an equally shallow one has been crossing the South Island. An intense anticyclone, however, covers eastern Australia and the Tasman Sea, so barometers may be expected to rise shortly over the Dominion. Rather- unsettled weather with scattered rain was experienced yesterday in the North Island, while in the South Island it was mainly fair. Since last night, however, the weather has become more generally unsettled and rain has fallen in many places in the South Island also. Temperatures have been cold, and some high country in the south has received a coating of snow. Northerly winds prevailed yesterday over the southern half of the South Island, but elsewhere winds were southerly in direction, and were strong in places about and to the north of Cook Strait. Moderate to strong southerlies were almost general this morning. It rained in Auckland yesterday throughout the day, the total fall being one of 3G points. A light northeasterly wind was blowing in the early part of the morning, but the wind turned later to the south. The weather this morning was fair, with a breeze from the south-south-west. Wellington had mostly overcast weather, with a few traces of rain in the morning. During the afternoon, however, there were some brighter intervals, 1.1 hours of bright sunshine being recorded. A keen breeze from the south-south-east prevailed, but this died away to a calm during the night, and a frost of three degrees was recorded at Kelburn. Christchurch experienced a fine and sunny day. It was almost calm in the morning, but a keen easterly breeze was blowing in the afternoon. The latter, however, turned to the southwest early this morning, and rain began to fall at 8.30 a.m. At 9 a.m. today it was still raining. Dunedin had a sunny day, with a light south-westerly breeze. Rain totalling seven points fell there last night, and the weather this morning was cloudy with a fresh wind blowing .from the south-west.
