SENIOR HANDICAP

HIGH SCORES AGAIN

GENERAL TOPICS

v . . (By "Ring.") | Games not completed . on the wet Saturday in June, and the second life of the senior handicap tournament from the opening day, were finalised on, Saturday: High scores again figured in'the results, Kia Ora scoring 35 and Wellington East 31 in their respective matches in the senior A grade, while several teams scored well up in the twenties.in all grades. Awatea defeated University by 21 to 16, Awatea's nippier forwards giving them the advantage. University at times were slow at passing in to the goal, and by the time the pass was given, "Awatea defence had the other players well covered. University again showed much improved handling of the ball. Wesley acounted for Dental Clinic by 23 goals to 18. Clinic's pass back from the centre added to the work necessary to get the ball to the forward third, and they would do well to eliminate' this from their team— every little, bit of wasted energy tells against a team, particularly in the senior grade. Kia Ora scored heavily against Technical, but nevertheless had to keep on th"1. move to,do so! Once again it can be said that the high score against Technical does not give any indication of the actual play—Technical only require accurate shooting to bring them well up in the list. Wellington East had no difficulty in defeating Training College, who could not penetrate the strong East defence. Difficulty in getting clear to make openings close in forced Training College to take too many risky shots, and they had no hope of getting a second chance with M. Wilson there to intercept and clear to the East centres. EXECUTIVE MEETING. Mrs. A. Symonds presided over a full attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Wellington basketball executive on Monday night. . Wembley -■ Club advised that they were prepared to forfeit their match on August 7, the day on which their team would-play in Taranaki. Olympic, Island Bay, 'and Whitcombes were granted permission to play in-Lthe'tournament to be held at Steel's gym., and the Empire BoxVictoria Laundry match was approved. i An invitation to members of the executive to attend the annual dance of the Aspro Club was received. Island Bay's application for the regfading of J. Simpson, from Melrose thirds to Island Bay fourths, was refused. Although it was not possible to enter any representative team in the Wairoa Association's, tournament, which is to be held in September, the executive [decided that notice of the tournament should be sent to all clubs, in the event that some teams may desire to enter. .Rotorua's offer of hospitality to the Wellington second A team for their tournament was gratefully accepted, and .the dates advised for the tournament .were September 3 and 4. ... Tafcanaki Association wrote proposing that the Wellington thirds leave Wellington on Wednesday, August 11, play ..at Inglewood on Thursday, travel to Rahotu ._ on the coast .. to meet a Coastal team on Friday, and then back to New Plymouth on Saturday to play Taranaki. The Northern Association would like tc play against Wellington after'the .Taranaki game if it could be arranged:^: The team would leave for Wellington on the Monday morning. The proposal was approved*, . A questionnaire was received from the Auckland Association asking for information regarding the team for the tournament and delegates for the council meeting. Mrs.-A.. Symonds. and Miss O. Wharton were appointed delegates to the council. Managers for representative teams were as follows:—Tournament team for Auckland, Mrs. A. Symonds; second A' team for Rotorua, Mrs. G. Calder; senior B team for Canterbury, Mrs. A. Muir; third grade team for Taranaki, Mrs. G. Calder. Captains appointed were:—Senior A, J. Mitchell (Wellington East), captain; M. Blake (Kia Ora), vice-captain. Second A team: M. Worboys (Wesley), captain; E. Hawkey (Technical 0.G.), vice-captain. Senior B: B. Wintle (Kia Ora), captain; E. Hathaway (St. Patricks), vice-captain. Third grade was not appointed. Correspondence was ■ received from the St; Joseph's Club .. regarding the playing of R. Riddiford for Wembley. The secretary was instructed to make inquiries from Wembley. A second letter from St. Joseph's with regard to ! a complaint that one of their members had broken a bylaw was received, and the secretary was asked to write to the club stating that the executive felt that the club had apparently not been able to clear the matter up, but every confidence was held in the ground. HUTT VALLEY EXECUTIVE. The meeting of the Hutt Valley executive was held on Monday night, Mrs. R. Cole presiding. • Also present were ■ Mesdames Cleland, Baldwin, Misses Benton, Davidson, Hamilton, Taylor, Burns, Williams; Milburn, and Lambourn. Mesdames Cole and Baldwin were appointed Hutt Valley delegates to the New Zealand Council meeting to be held in Auckland prior to the Dominion tournament, and Mrs. D. Cleland was appointed manager of the representative team. ' In appreciation of the services of the late Mr. Tyrall, the executive decided that next Saturday's games would be played as a Tyrall benefit day, admission to both courts for both players and spectators being 6d. It is expected that good support will be given the benefit, as all followers of the gamp in the Valley know that the work put in by Mr. Tyrall was of great assistance to the association, particularly in the early days of the association. Lengthy discussion on the report that I Technical O.G. had played 10 players in games brought to the notice of the executive' that many of the teams do not study the bylaws. Technical had ten players for their team, and apparently desiring to give every girl a game, substituted the tenth player for the second half. It was decided to write to Technical O.G. asking for information as to the matches ■in • which ■this had" been done. It was also stated that Hutt Aotea had used Technical O.G. members to make up their num.ber when short. The secretary was asked to communicate with them and draw their attention to the bylaws.

The Hutt team for the New Zealand .tournament is to be announced at.a back to childhood party which is to be held in the Catholic Hall. Main Street, Lower Hutt, next Thursday, July 22. The lower grade representative trials will also be announced then.
