GALSWORTHY'S "ESCAPE"

I The second performance of Galsworthy's episodic play "Escape" was presented by the Repertory Society in the Concert Chamber last evening before a large and enthusiastic audience. "Escape" is a difficult play for production by reason of its many characters, but W. S. Wauchpp, as producer, is to be complimented on his fine work in bringing every character to life before his audience. The central character of Captain Matt Devant was taken by Mr. R. E. Pope, who played throughout with sincerity and showed a dramatic and sympathetic interpretation of the final scenes. Outstanding characterisations were given by • Mr. H. Painter, as the shopkeeper and convict, and Mr. Arthur Heany as parson. Miss Pauline Shotlander was splendid as the shingled lady in the scarlet pyjamas. Although there was a slight. inconsistency in some scenes, the play, as presented, was polished and well-interpreted. Others in the cast were:—Mr. L. F. de Berry, as the old gentleman; Mr. E. F. Kain, as the deep-voiced captain; Miss Irene Spidy, the shopkeeper's wife; Miss Geraldine Litchfield, as the charming wife of the Man in Plus Fours; and Misses Ailsa Newton and Mabel Gray, who were well suited as Miss Grace and Miss Dora.

The play will be presented each evening this week.
