LOFTY PROGRESSING WELL

'" Lofty, a member of J. S. Shaw's team at Riccarton, is coming to hand nicely after a spell and he should be in the right order to race well at the Grand National Meeting (says a southern report). After winning a division of a trial plate at Motukarara last October, he ran some fair races, but has not won since. Since joining Shaw's team he has been spelled, and. judging by the way he is getting through his work, he will be a much-improved horse when next raced.

Rising five years of ago, Lofty is a brown gelding by Honour (a winner of the New Zealand Derby) from Pride (a winner of the New Zealand Oaks). Pride was by Sutala from Egotism, but though she won the Oaks her race record was otherwise not outstanding. Jaloux, a sister of Pride, was a good racehorse, winning the Summer Cup at Auckland, beating Admiral Drake and Pegaway, and finishing second to Hunting Cry in the Great Northern Derby, second to Compris in the Wellington Cup when beaten a neck in the New Zealand record time of 2min 29sec, and third in the New Zealand St. Leger.
