AUTUMN COMES

(Original.)

One night I woke up at about 12 o'clock. 1 nestled closer in my bedclothes .for a few minutes, and then I heard a curious noise—it sounded like bolls tinkling in the distance. Carefully, I ■ tiptoed to the window and looked out.

There-on the lawn were hundreds of tiny beings. Dressed in the gayest of colours—golds, reds, and yellows—they capered about, laughing and frolicing like sunbeams. More joined them, and they played about for some time. Then suddenly a fairy horse landed on the clothes ;prop. A tiny man dismounted, stood up, and blew three blasts on his fairy horn. Instantly all games.stopped, and .everyone listened attentively as he announced:

"The Queen is on her way here." At those words the fairies sprang to life. One fay touched a blade of grass—it changed to a pretty pink toadstool. In a few 'minutes all was ready for the Queen.,' Then the air became filled with fairy ■ music. There was a rush of wings and a magnificent carriage drawn by two large moths came to a standstill on the lawn. The footman opened the door and ' out stepped Queen Autumn. Like the pixies' she was dressed in gold with red and yellow trimmings. She was led to the seat of honour on the throne, and she sat there watching the elftn games.' . Suddenly—l don't know why—l clapped my hands, and at the noise the fairies .flew away after their Queen. Only tne ' toadstool remained to, remind'me of the wonderful scene that had taken-place on the lawn a few minutes before.
