WELLINGTON FIGURES
With the exception of the tyre tax, which is slightly down, Customs revenue &; Wellington last month was buoyant/there being incrp.ases in practically all returns. The total collections aggregated £444,411, compared with £412,850 in April, .1936, an increase of £31,561. The net Customs revenue collected last month totalled £285,349, compared with £276,460 in April, 1936, an increase of £9889. For the four months of the current year the revenue totalled £1,106,344, compared with £1,016,563 for the corresponding month last year, an increase of £89,771, while compared with the same period in 1935 there is an increase of £276,711.
Following are the figures for the four months of this year, those for. the corresponding period last year being given irr parentheses: January, •' £259,078 (£231,145); February, £242,850 (£229,----938); March, £318,057 (£279,020); April, £286,349 (£276,460). The duty collected on motor spirit last month totalled £43,705; at 6d a gallon ■.and . £29,137 at .4d a gallon, a total of ,£72,842,". compared with £37,536 at Gd^a.gallon: and £25,037 at 4d a gallon, a'total of £62,573 for April, 1936, an increase of £10,269. For the four months; the totals are £285,440 and; £308,720 respectively, a decrease .of' £23,280.
The amounts collected at 4d a gallon are already '■' included in the net Customs revenue given above, being paid into the Consolidated Fund, as distinct from: those at Gd a gallon, which go to the Main Highways Fund. Collections of tyre tax last month totalled £1716, compared with £1892 for April, 1936, a decrease of £176. For the four months there is an increase of £399, the figures being £7200 and £6801 respectively. .
Sales tax collections continue to expand,' last month's total amounting to £100,312. compared with £92,173 in •April, 1936, an increase of £14,139. The total for the four months, £394.869, shows an increase of £72,440 over 'the last corresponding period's total of £322,429, This tax came into force on February 10, 1033, and the total so far collected at Wellington is £3.391,001. . ' ' Beer excise collections for. April totalled £6329, compared with £4789 for April, 1936, an increase of £1540. For-the four months the figures are £24,442- and £20,022" respectively, an increase of £4420.-...,", ;
