BOARD'S REPLY

When the above letter was referred to .the Education Board today, the secretary stated that everything possible was being done to expedite the erection of a new school at Newtown. As far back as June, 1935, the board submitted an application to the' Education Depai-tment for a grant for a new building. At this time, however, there was difficulty in reaching finality concerning additions to the site, and in consequence, in determining the actual lay-out of the new school. The negotiations in connection with the acquisition of properties have been very protracted and, as a matter of fact, have not been finally settled at this date. The area of the site is very limited having regard to the number on the roll. It was decided that the most satisfactory solution of the site problem would be to secure the Emmetf Street • properties and erect the new building in a position parallel to this street. This enabled the board to recast the plans and a fresh application went forward to the Department in June last. Cabinet approved of a grant in November, and working plans and specifications are now being prepared with the object of inviting tenders for the new building. In the meantime the taking of the Emmett Street properties under the provisions of the Public Works Act is in train. Before the Christmas holidays the chairman of the board and the secretary personally interviewed each occupier of the Emmett Street houses in order to explain the. position to them, and to seek their co-operation in giving effect to the desire of the board to make some better provision for the housing of the children at Newtown School. In view of the housing difficulty this course was followed in preference to turning .people out of their homes into the street.

The writer of the letter can rest assured that the interests of the children at Newtown are just as important to the members of, the board as those of the children who are situated in other parts of the Wellington Education District. .
