DEPARTMENT'S REPLY
"On the date referred to by the correspondent, there was ample accommodation for all passengers travelling by the trains leaving Lambton Station for Waterloo from 4.45 p.m. to 6.10 p.m.," states the Railway Department. "This fact is revealed from a review of the traffic carried on the trains in question. "The introduction of the 40-hour week principle has been a gradual process and the adjustments related thereto in the earlier stages varied the incidence of travel by suburban trains to a minor extent only. The Department, however, kept closely in touch with the position, to ensure that if the accommodation arranged for any of these trains was insufficient the trains would be strengthened as required by the necessities of the traffic, and this has been done. "The Department keeps tallies of passengers on all trains, and these indicate clearly that the workers' trains are, in general, amply provided with accommodation for the numbers travelling, although during1 the period of change-over to the 40-hour week principle some unusual fluctuations in the traffic by certain trains have occurred. " 'Comfort' seems to overlook . the fact that suburban workers who travel by train are very much better catered for than.by other methods of transport, and they are, in the majority of cases, also carried much more cheaply. It is a well-established fact that the Railways' ability to provide seats for every suburban traveller is in marked contrast to what is enjoyed by those in the city who'travel to their homes by other than the railway system." Mr. Harold C. Kent, treasurer of Todd Motors, Ltd., head office, Wellington, has been appointed to the-posi-tion of manager of the Alliance Finance Corporation (N.Z.), Ltd. The Alliance Finance Corporation (N.Z.), Ltd., was registered in Wellington recently to carry on the exclusive financing of Ford car purchases in arrangement with the Ford Motor Company of New Zealand, Ltd. It is reported from Addis Ababa that the Jibuti Railway Company has ordered from Italian manufacturers special railway coaches for the use of King Victor Emmanuel and Signor Mussolini.
