HUTT RAILWAY DIVISION
The Hutt Railway Division of the St. John Ambulance held its annual competitions for the Avoca and Self Help Cups on Thursday evening. The programme in the Self Help competition included dealing with a "patient" suffering from a fractured pelvis and fractured big toe, the transport of the patient, and oral individual tests. The results were:—Privates. L. G Turner, J. E. Ord, C. M. Cathro, and W. B. Buick, 1, with 84 points; Privates B. M. McKeown, R. G. Hall, W. L. Stewart, and Corporal R. McMullen, 2, with 78 points. The purpose of the Avoca Cup competition is to encourage initiative and improvising. Penalties are imposed if regulation splints or bandages are used. The "patient" to be treated was suffering from severe bleeding of the right foot and fracture of the left forearm. Candidates had also to pass an individual oral and triangular bandaging test. The results were:—Privates J. R. Carter, B. M. McKeown, Corporal R. McMullen, and Private W. L. Stewart, 1, 77 points; Privates A. S. Blanchard, F. C Wheeler, R. G. Hall, and L. G: Turner, 2, 70 points; and Private S. W. G. Rees, Corporal H. P. Wood, Privates J. E. Ord, and C. M. Cathro, 3, 64 points.
Divisional Superintendent R. C. Ho.rwell conveyed a hearty vote of thanks to Drs, J. T. Harding and J. P. Donald, who acted as judges, and expressed appreciation of the interest they had always shown in the division's activities.
The secretary, . Mr. ■A. J. Ross, announced that Dr. A. R. Thorne, superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, had consented to deliver a lecture on "The Control of a Modern Hospital" on November 12. and that Mr. W. B. Nicholson would give a talk on "Light and Colour." All railwaymen and their friends were being invited.
