TILDEN'S GENIUS
An English critic, writing of Tilden, says:—"Tilderi at 43 still retains an extraordinary amount of that genius which-, for seven .years kept him- on top'of the lawn tennis:world.. He cajr■stijl/send .over a first .service—not sc* many as in the j old' liays-r-wMch ;is fasWr than any seen at.the "last Wimbkdon; he has .still, a great-forehand, *rhich for speed is equal to any in the world,, and one .immediately conjures up that beautiful, stroke, from left to right hara'to the backhand, and .so near the line, with which .he helped himself to many outright aces. -His backhand is ho longer thegreat forcing stroke which at his:1-', zenith :it was. Today it is generally taken with, too much back cut to be a forcing shot, but still it counts as a great-backhand able to look at any other; backhand and. not be'• ashamed..- By this appraisement may be measured: the greatness of the Tilden: that^ was i:r doing, homage to the tilden, thatwis."
