AT EVANS BAY

OPENING DAY RACES

The Evans Bay Club was fortunate in the weather: for'this year's opening day..1: "Sin/ contrast ..with the opening •days of the5 last few years, Monday-was as1' nearly perfectras!;cpuld be wished; A.splendid sailing breeze with little' or- no sea, running made conditions ideal for racing, and some; really, keen contests were witnessed by /the many spectators.- .:. ■■"•■■.-. '■":■:■' --^ ■■-'■''■ Among the Taurangas the- two most successful skippers were Billy' Williams (Maureen) "and' Eric Wagstaffe/^Betfy), who each secured a first and second.;

Rough (Scamp) started/the .'season well with a couple of capsizes,; - but,: with a .little-more .experience, should do" quite well.' ■ .

The Vampire justified her appearance ..by. scraping home first, in both I class xaces after very keen tussles with" the Hiptide. Unfortunately,, though, Evan Julian neglected to cross the starting: line in the afternoon race and was disqualified. Allan Johnson (Belvedere), . Chum Beck (Riptide), and Phil Harlen (Damfino II) are to be congratulated on fine showings under difficulties, the. former two-having new sails, which they had to nurse, and the latter an exceedingly old one.

The honours among the 12ft" 6in boats must, however, go to Pat Millar (Damfino I). Sailing off the 44-minute mark, Pat brought his boat home to win comfortably by nearly a minute in the afternoon race.

Conditions were ideal for Clive Highet's Impudence and, after a very close. race with the Advance, he crossed, the line first, losing first place on corrected times by ssec.

In the afternoon race, Jack Coleman showed that the Lavina has lost none of her old speed by leading the field home; The Lauchlan's • Jewel; sailed by Nils.Andreasson, a visitor from Norway, -finished well to take second place on corrected times. Both races were close, and it is unfortunate that the Ikarere, sailed by Cliff Hollis. had no spinnaker, or the results may have been different.

In the speedboat race, "Tbwny" Williams drove the Spindrift home first to win by 2sec from Miss Taubman.
