CHANGES IN THE SOUTH
With the. advent of a new totalisator and improved betting facilities, the Ashburton Trotting Club has announced that it has terminated the totalisator's contract, and that in the future the machine will be run by the club with the secretary, Mr. J. B. Nicoll, as manager. Mr. Nicoll has been interesting himself in the inside operation of the totalisator at various meetings, including the Wellington Meeting on the first two days. ~. ..:
Since the New Zealand Sapling Stakes Meeting, held, last June, this club has been busy making alterations to meet with the times and the new totalisator, a wooden structure 104 ft long and 26ft wide, with a 6ft verandah running right round it, is now almost completed. It will have a 30ft indicator, and although manually operated, it is estimated that the handling capacity will be £40,000. - With little alteration it will allow for the installation of an electric machine later. There appears to be a growing tendency for clubs to take over the management of their totalisators, arid although such a move has not yet been riiscussed, it is expected that both the New Zealand Metropolitan and Canterbury Park Trotting Clubs will follow suit with the appearance of their electric machine, probably at the end of this season. :■. ■ .•:..
