LABOUR'S AIM
"TO CAPTURE CONTROL"
At a meeting of Mr. Forsyth's supporters held last .night new developments in the campaign were discussed, and the following statement was issued for publication.
"The electors throughout the city are waking up to a sense of their responsibility in the municipal, by-election. They are realising that action is imperative if Wellington is'to be saved from ■ the ravages of Socialism and Communism combined. The Communists declare in their published poster that they must make Wellington 'a stronghold' for Socialism, Communism, and Labour, and the Labour candidate has said that 'we shall control the City Council.'
"The Socialist Party in Parliament has introduced a clause into what is. known as the Washing Up Bill, to deprive city ratepayers from having a vote at this election because they happen .to have their homes, say, at Petone, Johnsonville, or the Hutt.. Another thing is this: if a ratepayer is paying rates on his home, the Socialists want to deprive him of a ;vote covering a company's property which he represents, although the company he represents may pay £300 or £400 a year in rates. The Socialists and Communists, therefore, whether in Parliament or the City Council, are trying to capture the City Council in this by-election for-4he purpose of con-, trolling the expenditure of ratepayers' money, although they themselves may have no monetary interest in the city or any property in their own right. This by-election is the opportunity that all right-thinking Citizens have presented to them whereby they can exercise their rights, by their votes, to prevent Communists and Socialists dominating our civic affairs. It therefore behoves every man and woman who has a vote to vote for the candidate who will safeguard their interest and their homes. ■■'•■.
"This city has not been built up by Socialist:, and Communists, but has been built up and is being maintained by the energy, industry, and savings of prudent citizens, and all. their efforts are being threatened by the junction of Socialists and Communists in their attempt to capture the City Council."
