MARKED SUCCESS
ACCOUNTING CONGRESS
The recent congress on accounting held at Melbourne was a marked success, states a New Zealand delegate. Strong delegations from all the States were present, and New Zealand was represented by Messrs. W. G. Reid (Dunedin) and D. G. Johnston and F. H. Bass (Wellington). There was an. attendance of about five hundred each day at the technical sessions, and the evening meeting at the Town-Hall attracted an audience of over 1000 persons.
The papers given by well-known members of the profession were of a high order and included the following subjects:—"Public Finance and the Form and Presentation of Public Accounts," "The Rights of Preference Shareholders," "The Auditor's Report," "Accounting Terminology," "Cost Accounting," "Budgetary Control," "Resumption of Privately-owned Public Utilities," and an address on "The History of the Accounting Profession." Each paper was subjected to criticism and comment by five selected commentators, an* their remarks brought out many interesting points. An exhibition of accounting machines and office appliances of all kinds was held in the same building and attracted large attendances.
The kindly hospitality of the Melbourne hosts as evidenced by the many social functions held during the congress week, and the whole arrangements were smoothly and efficiently carried out by the secretary and members of special committees.
