RIOTING IN SPAIN
FURTHER DISTURBANCES
MADRID, March 18.
Communists having made a bonfiri of all church statues at Yecla, municipal authorities at El Saucejo, taking a leaf from Germany's book, "protectively arrested" and took to prison all of the local religious statues, thereby outwitting the rioters who threatened to bomb a church.
Two men were killed in a riot at Oviedo and one at Ocano as the result of a gaol disturbance, which guards suppressed. An employee entered a Barcelona cafe and interrupted a game of cards by shooting two players, killing one and wounding the other. Two gunmen robbed a Stock Exchange mes. senger of £345. They were chased over roofs and captured by police and soldiers. The Government has closed Fascist centres throughout Spain.
House. In the confusion throughout the night no attempt was made to estimate the total casualties, but the death toll will undoubtedly exceed earlier estimates of 50.
At Wheeling (West Virginia), which was directly in the path, of the roaring Ohio River flood, heroic preparations were made all night to meet the impending crisis. Part o£ the business area is already inundated, and if the river reaches the expected height early on Thursday it will flood most of the city. With the aid of police thousands of people are being evacuated to higher ground.
