FOOTBALL AT HOME

(Received March 20, 11 a.m.) LONDON, March 19,

Football results include:—

Association.—Second division: Leicester v. Newcastle, 1-0. Southern division: Newport v. Gillingham, 4-2. Rugby.—Middlesex v. Oxfordshire, 19-18; Swansea v. Cardiff, 3-0. it has definitely deteriorated from the Italian point of view. There is no need to dissent from Signor Mussolini's observation as to the necessity of "indispensable pauses" in wars of this character. But they are extremely inconvenient when the country has been led to expect quick victories. Moreover, the rigour of the restrictions imposed by the Government as a reply to sanctions must create serious apprehension as to whether the economic life of the country, and, with it, the prosecution of the war, can survice if the pauses are frequent and prolonged. DANGERS REMOVED. On the Abyssinian side, the demonstration of their ability to attack and the cohesion shown by their leaders in the north have completely changed the situation. It should arrest further defections to the other side.

The fact that the Italians are no nearer to the railway than they were two months ago should decrease the previous, anxiety about munitions, which ought now to be coming in freely. Lack of ammunition and possible early disintegration have always, in my view, been their two great dangers. They have now receded into the distance.

The events of the last few weeks make it even more certain that next April will confront Signor Mussolini with some difficult decisions. T!»3re is little more than three months' campaigning weather left, and, judging by the present lack of success, it is unlikely that1 any important results will be achieved by then.
