LATE MR. FRED J. STOWE
In the death ol Mr. Fred J ("Chifl ) Stowe at Hastings last Sunday there passed away another member of the old school ol racing. He had been confined to his bed for over four years. The late Mr. Stowe was born in England and came to the Dominion at the age of two years with his parents, who settled first in Napier. At an early age he entered the racing establishment of the late Mr. William Douglas at Te Mahanga. Graduating from there, he went to Hastings to be a free lance horseman, and he won numerous races over hurdles, over country, and on the flat. His most important victory was the Wanganui Derby on Queen of Trumps, owned by the late Hon. J. D. Ormond, for whom he won many races round Hastings district. In 1891, when riding for this same owner, he met with a very serious accident when Otairi fell in the Wellington Steeplechase. He never fully recovered from the injuries sustained in that race. He still continued riding, but also set up in Hastings as a public trainer, later acting as private trainer for Mr. E. J.. White, of Porangahau, for whom he won many races. He also acted' as private trainer for the late Mr. Rangi Kerehoma. Retiring from training he went to Masterton to act as caretaker of the Opaki racecourse, but ill health compelled him to resign and he returned, to Hastings several years ago. "Chin"," as he was known to his many acquaintances, was very fond of a.", clean outdoor sport, and he earned a name for himself as being one of the straightest of goers. He married Miss F. Collins, of Napier, sister to the owner-trainer the late Mr. Fred Collins.
