BELL TOLLED

"REO WAIRUA" SOUNDED

A fitting tribute to the memory of Britain's sailor King was sounded over the city this afternoon when, at the request of the Internal Affairs Department, the Carillon Society had the five-ton Bourdon bell, "Reo "Wairua" (Spirit Voice) tolled ninety-five times. ■

Commencing at 2 p.m. the great bell was, tolled at one minute intervals, ones for every year of his Majesty's life, a total of seventy. A three-minute interval was observed and the bell was again tolled once for every year of his Majesty's reign, a total of twenty-five.

The depp note sounding solemnly 'over the city called attention to the fact that the King's death constituted a national loss, and was consequently marked by the solemn sound of lh<J largest bell in the National WaiMemorial Carillon.
