MERCANTILE MARINE

ADMITTED TO R.S.A,

By a motion carried unanimously at a special general meeting of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association last night the rules of the association were altered to admit members of the Mercantile Marine who served in the war to full membership. The president of the association (Lieut.-Colonel A. Cowles, V.D.) presided and said that he was sure that all returned soldiers would agree that men who held the British War Medal and the Mercantile Marine War Medal should be able to join the association. Mr. E. C. Hale moved that rule 2 of the association should be altered so that the .term "soldier" should mean any member of his Majesty's Forces, whether on land, sea, or air, and that the term "returned soldier" should mean a person who had served in or with his Majesty's Forces overseas during the Great War or any previous war waged by the Crown, also a person who served in or with the British Mercantile Marine Service or transports in war zones, and who had been awarded the British War Medal and Mercantile Marine War Medal, and cither had been honourably discharged or was awaiting discharge from such forces. The motion was seconded by Mr. H. C. Cooper and carried without further discussion.
