SALESMAN'S CHANCE
PROVINCIAL HORSES WELL
(Special from "Early Bird."}
• AUCKLAND, August 22. Kcports from round the country tracks this week suggest that some o£ the provincial horses will be more forward than' generally thought for their engagements at the Pakuranga Meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. ■ At Te'Awamutu Knight of Australia has come iihrough his preparation well and it is anticipated-that he may be able to make amends for his failures on the flat at the Great Northern Meeting. Another hope from Te-Awa-mutu is Salesman, whose chance in the seven furlongs hack race is very bright. fo.r he appears to have improved a good deal since his placing among a stronger hack field at the last Auckland fixture.
At Cambridge Square Acre has been getting through consistently. good work and it would only be a matter of his getting back to the form lie displayed twelve months ago to make him very difficult to beat in the Sylvia Park Handicap. Recently he was credited with beating Astarth in a trial gallop and that was a smart effort for a hack in view of Astarth's good open sprint form.
Prince Acre has not been sent seriously against the watch since returning from the Wellington Meeting, but he is very forward and a sharp sprint should fit him for the task on Saturday. The Acre gelding performed very well at Trentham, and taking a line on the class he was opposed to there his prospects here are good. It remains to be seen how he shapes under weight, for he has 9.0 on Saturday, with the conditions to his liking. Silver Brier is looking very well, and if she gets a good run m the race that is selected for her she may take a lot of beating. She ran nice races among the big hack fields at Ellerslie at the last meeting and with a drop in the class at this meeting she will be more equal to the occasion. She is trained by the trotting trainer C. Moran, who knows how to get them right. An interesting work-out at Te Rapa on Tuesday was that in which Sporting Blood, Grand Sport, and Sirona participated. The first-named pair did longer work, and then the trio sprinted three furlongs in 39 4-ssec, splendid time under the conditions, with Grand Sport beaten off Sporting Blood and his two-year-old, brother, also Grand Sport leave for Australia tomorrow, and on the .same boat will be the teams of E. Pope and W. Townsend. Hack hurdles candidates for Ellersw Wt°T WeJ, c schooled the same morning at Te Rapa were Valpai (Mr J the wing, and the third fence sawboth
