EASTBOURNE COUNCIL

Tlie Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise) presided, at the meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council last evening The Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) reported that-,for' the' four months'.to the end of July the sum of1 £658 was collected in rates, as against £1390 for the corresponding period last year. The lesser amount collected, was to.be expected,-as, the outstanding rates at the beginning of the year were £1500 less than at the commencement of the previous year. The rate demands for the current year had been issued- and the collections for the new year were now coming in steadily.

To the date of writing (August 6), stated Mr. Bishop in his report, 525 properties had been connected to the sewerage system,- and with the discontinuance of the sanitary contract service at the end of September many inquries were being xeceived in'respe'ct of connecting the balance of the properties.

The' borough engineer (Mr. W. J. .Frethey), in his, report for July, stated that improvement in the building tirade was shown by the depositing of plans for several new residences. The value, of permits for the month was £2240, and fees collected £6 5s

There were no cases of infectious disease during July.

Seven unregistered dogs were impounded and removed to Petone for destruction.

The Mayor was appointed to represent the council at a conference of local bodies, called by the Lower Hutt ?°™.Y. gh Council, to discuss hospital facilities-in the valley.
