SUEZ CANAL DUES

Suez. Canal dues will, in;future be expressed in • sterling and Egyptian piastres, instead of in.gold francs. The change follows upon a recent. Egyptian Royal decree abolishing the gold clause in Egypt. The following statement was issued by the Suez Canal Company:— "As from July 8, 1935, the transit dues specified by- Article 7 of the .rules of navigation of the Suez Canal Company will be levied at the rate .of 7s 6d or 36.56 Egyptian piastres per ton.: On the basis of the present-rate of, "exchange. th«?se dues equal the : current rate of 5.75 gold francs. Transit-dues for ships in ballast will consequently be levied at the rate of 3s 9d. or 18.23 Egyptian piastres per ton. Passenger dues will remain fixed • at ■ 10. 'gold francs." At one time the canal toll was as high as 13.50 sold francs per ton net From this figure it was gradu-; ally reduced to 7 francs in 1928, and1 in "1930 was lowered further to 6.25 j francs.
