WELLINGTON RACES

THE WINTER MEETING

FINAL' DAY AT TRENTHAM

WEATHER AGAIN PINE

(By "Rangatira.")

Although overcast with occasional breaks of sunshine in the forenoon and fresher than on Thursday, the weather was again fine for the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Trentham' today, and there "were, prospects that the light clouds would clear before the afternoon was through. Another excellent attendance was attracted early to the course, so that the fixture promised to be as successfully concluded as it began. The fields in all events were good, with the standard of the racing remaining at the high plane that Trentham has set ~in recent years. . With an absence of rain since the meeting opened the track continued to dry, and today's going was the best experienced during the three days, though it was still soft. The appoint- , ments as usual were all that could be desired, with running descriptions broadcast for the convenience of patrons. The betting was under the win-and-place system. Results and notes on the running to time of going to press were:— . TALAVERA HURDLE HANDICAP, ■ £200; second £40, and third £20 from the stake; 1J miles. s—s—T. A. Smith's and W. Smith's eh g Debut, by Diacquenod— . Avola, 4yrs, 9.2 (R. Smith) .... 1 I—l—C. Hart's b g Hunting Jay, by Hunting Song—Blue Jay, syrs, 11.4 (R. Beale) 2 3—-3— W. R. S. Brewer's eh g Ruaform, by Ruapapa—Recherche, 6yrs, 10.4 (P. Burgess) ..w 3 Also started: 4-4 Swift and Sure 9.13 iR. Drinkwater), 2-2 Prince Val 9.9 (R. E. Thomson), 8-8 Bright Sky 9.0 (C. Carroll), 6-6 Imasurvey 9.0 (C. Thomson), 7-7' Kia Tina 9.0 (E. Burgess). ■ ■ , ' ■ .: Debut, who was converted to hurd- . ling only a couple of months ago, and had previously had only one race over the fences when he failed to stay, upset the calculations of form followers in the Talavera Hack Hurdles. He Was out in front all the way. Going to the back he was eight lengths clear, but then he was allowed a breather and Hunting Jay, Swift and Sure, and Ruaform closed to a length of him. Hunt- . ing Jay was practically on terms at the second to last fence, but Debut then slipped-away again, and with the final fence safely behind he came on to ■ win easily by three and a half lengths from Hunting Jay, with Ruaform getting up to beat Swift and Sure for the other dividend six lengths back. Prince Val fell at the first fence, and Imasurvey, after attempting to run off along the back, was pulled up. Time, 3min ssec. (Winner trained by T. R. George, • Trentham.) NOVICE HANDICAP. £200; second horse £40 and third £20 from the stake; 6 furlongs. B—9—E. N. Didham's b g Valarth, by Valkyrian—-Dismantle, 3yrs, . 8.2- (A. E. Didham) 1 I_2—W. Vaughan), 4-3 Tail Light 8.0 > (G. Humphries), 6-7 Lacquer 7.13 (C. T. Wilson), 12-12 Mowgli 7.10 (J. Forsyte, 11-11 Blue Mauritius 7.7 (H. Long), 10-10 Romp Along 7.7 (W. E. Pine). Bracketed: Debham and Delysia. The favourite again missec the win dividend in the Novice Handicap, but Debham made a great bid for the stake over the last furlong, and just failed to reach the southerner, Valarth. Colombo, Tail Light, Bazaine, Hunting Cat, Sporting Song, and Romp Along appeared the early leaders, and when they were crossing over to the course proper Colombo and Bazaine had charge from Tail Light and Valarth, with Isaacs on the rail and Debham, who again drew wide out on the course., Valarth and Debham lodged their claims from below the false rail, •and Valarth, taking charge from Colombo at the distance, held off Deb-, ham by a head. Colombo was a length and a half away third, with five lengths back to Sporting ¥song, Isaacs, Hunting ; t!at, Romp Along, 'and Tail Light, and ' another gap to Blue Mauritius. [ The winner is due to leave for Melbourne during the next fortnight. Time, lmin 173 sec. (Winner trained by A. E. Didham, Mosgiel.) JULY STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, £350; second horse £70, and third £35 from the stake; about 3 miles. ,3 —4—B. Brewer's b g Tudor, by Little' England—Miss Archie, syrs, 11.1 (C. Thomson) ...... 1 . 6 —5-r-J. D. Todd's br m Anemometer, by .Weathervane—Glen ; Helen, 6yrs, 9.0 (E. Deslandes) 2 B— B—C. Pritchard's b g Pahu, by Warplane—Cinnamon, 9yrs, 9.2 (M. H. Nicol) : 3 Also started: 4-3 Valpeen 12.0 (W. J. Bowden), 1-1 Riotous 11.6 (R. Beale), 2-2 Ruby Meteor 10.4 (D. O'Connor), 7-6 Manawatu 9.8 (A. McDonald), 5-7 Sir Musk 9.0 (J. F. Fergus). Tudor gave a beautiful exhibition of clean, fast jumping out in front all the way irf the July Steeplechase, and he was never seriously threatened at any stage. Going into the back the last time he opened his break to five or six lengths, and with five furlongs to go it was obvious that Anemometer was the only one among the others • with any sting left in her. At the big brush Tudor made his poorest jump, but he went over the next splendidly. Coming through a gap in the last fence, he ran on an easy six lengths' winner from Anemometer, with Pahu thrashed out to keep third prize from Valpeen twelve lengths further back.- Manawatu, who made some bad jumps in the last round, was the only other to complete. Ruby Meteor crashed at the second fence, so was out of it early, and Riotous, jumping well and a prospect at the time, hit the sod wall seven furlongs out and tossed his rider. Time, 6min 383 sec. ■ ' (Winner trained by L. Knapp, Awapuni.) CROFTON HANDICAP, £200; second horse £40 and third £20 from the stake; 6 furlongs. 6—7—Mrs. R. Fleming's b g Mount Val, by Valkyrian—Ell Sorella, - 4yrs, 8.0 (C. T. Wilson) 1 3—3— J. Alexander's b f Linguist, by Paladin—Countersign, 3yrs, 7.12 (J. Mclnally) 2 *12—12— H. Jones's b g Royal Feast, by Mercian King—Morning Gift, 4yrs, 7.9 (R. W. Savage) 3 *9 —9—P. Madson's br g Windward, by Gainscourt—Arbitration, 4yrs, 7.7 (W. E. Pine) ........ 3 *Dead heat. Also started: 2-2 Sunny Maid 9-9 (B. H. Morris), 11-11 Acceptable 9.1 (G. Humphries), 4-4 Collision 9.1 (P. At-

kins), 5-6 Grand Score 8.8 (H. Long), 13-13 Master Reynard 8.7 (S. Anderson), 1-1 Solaria 8.7 (J. W. Winder), 10-10 Leprechaun 8.0 (S. Wilson), 7-5 Landlubber 7.7 (W. Thomson), 8-8 Terry. 7.7 (A. Messervey), 14-14 Thane 7.7 (R. Marsh). The finest finish at the meeting was witnessed in the Crofton Hack Handicap in which four horses crossed the line almost abreast. Solaria and Sunny Maid were prominent early with Grand Score, Landlubber, Windward, Linguist; Mount Val, and Leprechaun all in forward positions. The leaders were the same on to the course proper, with Royal Feast and Collision moving up from further back. Solaria was the first to yield, and Leprechaun, Linguist, and Mount Val dashed through at the false rail. Linguist took charge at the distance, but over the last fifty yards Mount Val got up on her inner and beat her by a head, with Royal Feast and Windward dead-heating for third, only half a head back. Thane was fifth, followed by Grand Score, Sunny Maid, Landlubber, and Collision. Time, lmin 18£ sec. (Winner trained by T. Hobbs, Oamaru.) WINTER HURDLES HANDICAP, £500; second horse £100 and third £50 from the stake; 2J miles. 2—2—Mrs. W. A. Fuller's b m Revision, by Surveyor—Consultation, aged, 9.9 (G. Ridgway) .. 1 6^s—w. H. Gaisford's b g Esteem, by Pombal—Eulogy, 6yrs, 9.3 (R. Beale) 2 B_B_Mrs. M. W. Shiel's b g Lycidas, by Agrion—Lucinda, syrs, 9.0 (D. O'Connor) 3 Also started: 1-1 Rasouli 10.13 (E. Mackie), 3-6 Stanchion 10.5 (W. J. Pascoe), 7-3 Hounslow 10.1 (R. Drinkwater). 11-11 Aladdin 9.10 (J. Kerr), 4-4 Dunmure 9.0 (V. Langford), 9-9 London 9.0 (J. F. Fergus), 5-7 Master Musk 9.0 (A. S. Ellis), 10-10 Tareha 9.0 (J. Walshe). Revision, a full-sister to Landmark, repeated Rasouli's double of last year by winning the Winter Hurdles convincingly if not decisively by a length from Esteem and Lycidas. Revision led all the way and jumped perfectly. Along the back, with Dunmure and London tiring, Lycidas, Master Musk; ahd Esteem set out in pursuit, and Lycidas closed on the leader before the final fence. Revision, with a beautiful jump, leaped a length clear again, and quickly disposing of Lycidas, went on to win well by a length from Esteem, who finished fast over the last hundred yards. Lycidas was two lengths away, just ahead of Master Musk, and Rasouli, tailed off early, was with Hounslow several lengths away. The only mishap was when Aladdin dropped his rider before the stand. Time, 4min 45sec. ' . (Winner trained by J. O. E. Jones, Blenheim.)
