MRS. E. COATES
* MOTHER OF MINISTER
Advice was received at the office of the Minister of Finance today that Mrs. Edward Coates, mother of i the Minister of Finance (the Bt.: Hon. J. G. Coates) had died at 9 a.m. at : her home at Matakohe, Kaipara. ■ The late Mrs. Coates, who was a daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Aitkin, of Auckland, was 84 years of age. Although she never took a personalpart in--political affairs she was well known in i her own district and took a keen interest in the^ political life of her distinguished son. , ■--..■
Mrs. Coates resided at the.old homestead, "Ruatuna," where, the Coates family has lived for fifty years or more, and generally enjoyed .fairly good health. She was taken ill a few days ago and her condition'was said to be serious earlier in the week \ but as there was no indication of■ a turn for the worse yesterday, news of her death came as a shock this morning. Mr. Coates, who is still in England, has been advised by cable.
The funeral will take place from her home at. 2 p.m. on Monday.. : \
