COLD TEMPERATURES

Special forecast for Wellington:— •• Variable winds at first, but soutbcrlics again soon. Weather fair at first, but sonic showers later. Cold temperatures. The general forecast for the. Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate to strong south-west-erly ito southerly winds, gale' force still being reached in exposed places, but winds will decrease in force. The weather will be cold and changeable with'-scattered showers, but a gradual improvement may be expected. A series of rather deep westerly depressions has been crossing the Dominion, hence westerly to south-west-erly winds have predominated. These have been, moderate to strong generally, gale force being reached in exposed positions. On Saturday and Sunday the weather was mainly fair on the east coast and about Cook Strait. Otherwise it was generally changeable with rain at times, and last night the rain extended to east coast areas as far up as Castlepoint. Temperatures for the most part have been on the cold side, although on Sunday, except in the far south, they were somewhat milder. Auckland on Saturday had a strong and squally south-westerly wind with frequent, and at times 'heavy, showers. Yesterday's weather was changeable with occasional light showers. At 9 a.m. today the weather was fair to cloudy with a south-westerly breeze. Although it was cloudy at times, Wellington had fair weather during the weekend. Saturday morning was calm.. In the afternoon there was a north-westerly breeze and this freshened somewhat on Sunday. At 11.30 p.m. last night the wind turned to the south and light rain fell during this morning's early hours, eight points being recorded at Kelburn and two in Lower Hutt. At 9 a.m. today it was practically calm again, with an overcast sky. The sun, however, broke through later. Christchurch on Saturday had cold and for the most part overcast weather with practically no wind. Sunday's weather was dull and calm and rather milder, but at 7 p.m. a south-westerly buster blew up and nine points of rain fell between then and 9 p.m. The weather cleared later and was calm and fine this morning. Dunedin had cold and cloudy weather on Saturday, showers accompanying a moderate westerly wind in the morning. Rain fell throughout Sunday, the wind then being a light southerly. This increased in force last night and a south-westerly gale was blowing this morning although the sky was clear.
