THE LEVIN MEETING
GOLD CURE'S OPEN SEVEN
TWO TRtNTHAM SUCCESSES
' A:chang« in'the weather came at a fortunate time for the-Levin Racing Club's Extra Meeting at Levin on Saturday, and with the sun breaking through early in the - morning the day was fine and pleasant, though the | air always had a somewhat wintry j feel about it, enhanced by the snowcovered hills across the course. Considering the amount of rain that had fallen during the week the track, though dead and slow, was in much better racing order than might have been anticipated. The attendance i was good and the totalisatoi turnover amounted 'to £6006 10s, which compared quite favourably with the £7468 put through the machine at the club's ordinary meeting last Novem- . ber. • Several of the horses racing during the day claim engagements at' the „- Wellington Meeting next week, and some, such as Diauiond, Gold Cure, arid Arctic King, advanced their claims to notice. The form of some of the others hardly rose' to anticipation, but they may perform better on the roomier Trentham tra k and with Saturday's racing in them. : Gold Cure's win in the open event was a general surprise, and so was Miss Hushabye's second but the placings were fully deserved on the running. Gold Cure, a veteran who is staging a fine comeback after a bad breakdown over two years ago, had galloped particularly well at Awapuni earlier in the week and he showed that that trial was correct by the vway in which he came home to beat sevel-al useful open performers on Saturday. Arctic King's win in the Grand Hack Ctip was also an attractive effort, because he was not at all well ridden. This event carried a £25 trophy donated by Mr. G. Rundle, which was presented to his lessee-trainer (W. J. Wood) after the race. Arctic King's rider, L. H. Jones, was suspended for two weeks for causing interference to Reipar in the straight.
