(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, June 30.
Shortly after midnight on Saturday neighbours discovered a . dwelling owned and occupied by Mrs. Emmeline Lockwood, at Reidston, blazing fiercely. They rushed across and rescued Frederick R., R. Cullimore, who also resided there by pulling him through a window, but Mrs. Lockwood perished in the flames.
Mrs. Lockwood was an old woman of 83 years, who was able to move about only slowly. Her' charred remains were seen lying . between the rails of an iron bedstead, which had collapsed to the floor. Rescuers were unable to get near the body on account of the intense heat, which almost completely incinerated the body.
Mr. Cullimore, who was aged about 84 years, was burned about the hands, neck, and head. He was sent to hospital. His condition, on account o£ his age, is very serious.
