MEDAL FOR DOG
A three-year-old dog has been' awarded a- silver, medal and. a diploma by the. Council of. Justice ( towards Animals, whose honorary president is M. Claude Farrere, the French writer. The-dog;-Betty, is the regimental mascot o£ the 99th Infantry Regiment, stationed near Grenoble. Members of this regiment were called out on March 9 to rescue a_ man who had fractured.a.leg in the Alps. It was found impossible to bring him down without, aid, so before returning to the valley for help tht soldiers dug him a shelter in the snow and left him the protection of their mascot. Betty saved the injured man from being frozen to death by keeping him company for eighteen hours, during which tho warmth/of her coat warmed the helpless sufferer. During the night the temperature went.down to minus 22deg F. All the men of the Valloie section of the regiment were present when Betty was also presented with a gold collar from children animal-lovers. The Military Governor of Lyons sent a telegram of thanks to the organisers of the ceremony. Betty listened to all the speeches with a patient and understanding expression,, but refused to be photographed, showing her teeth and growling whenever the photographers approached. .
