CAR OVER BANK
PASSENGERS' LUCKY ESCAPE
A party of five golfers returning from the Westward Ho links yesterday afternoon had a lucky escape when the car in which- they were travelling left the South Makara Road at about 1.30 p.m. and rolled down a twenty-foot bank, coming to rest upside down. The car, which was a saloon model, met another vehicle at a very narrow portion of the road, and in endeavouring to get past went close to the edge. The side of the road was evidently soft after recent rains, and gave way under the weight of the vehicle, which slipped over the bank, turning a somersault before finishing up on a soft piece of ground in an inverted position. The windscreen and several windows were shattered, the roof was smashed, the body was badly knocked about, and the wheels and chassis twisted. The occupants made their escape through the windows, and apart from minor cuts and bruises were unhurt. They were very fortunate in not being badly cut by the broken glass, a large quantity of which was afterwards found in the wrecked car. The passengers were offered every assistance by nearby residents, and the car was afterwards salvaged by a breakdown gang and taken into the pity. . . ' '
