CAY ANNUAL DANCE

The Y.W.C.A. Hostel jn Brougham Street looked very gay on Saturday evening when the hostel annual dance was held. The tables were removed from the diving-room, and flag-like red and green decorations were hung from the ceiling, and garlands of red and green imitation flowers were draped along the walls. Pot plants and bowls of flowers were placed' about the room, one end of the sitting-room was used as a cosy lounge, with comfortable chairs arranged before a large fire, while ping-pong was played at the other end of the room. Throughout, the, evening, a spirit of friendliness pervaded the atmosphere, all thoroughly enjoying themselves. LAn excellent home-made supper was handed round. Between dances yodel songs were given by Mr. Hall, who played an accompaniment on the ukulele, and Mr. B. Hickford sang three solos. I Miss M. Laycock and Mr. H. Sapp won the Monte Carlo dance. The M.C. was Mr. Eric Lander, and Mr. p. Dyer supplied the music. The committee comprised Misses E. Billing, M. Small, A. Hall, L. Peters, H. Spurdle, B. Box. DELIGHTFUL EVENING

A FINE PROGRAMME

The Wellington orphans* Club certainly manages to give excellent entertainment to their many friends on •'Ladies' Night" each year, and the programme submitted on Saturday night was well lip to standard. The Masonic Hall, well-warmed (which was a thing to be thankful for), was brightly decorated in the club's colours of blue and yellow. The canopy and curtains, where the president and special guests o£ honour were seated, were in these colours, and round the walls were groups of greenery, camellia, and wattle branches laden with blossom. The stage decorations were matching. In the supper room, where excellent refreshment was served, the tables were adorned with narrow bands of blue and yellow and central vases of greenery and yellow flowers, the latter from the garden of Orphan Odlin at the Hutt. Chief Orphan E. A. Heron was in the chair, and was accompanied by Mrs. Heron (wearing black and gold marocain threaded with tinsel, and a coatee of gold lame trimmed with fur). Officials from other clubs included Mr. Wauchop (president of the Wellington Savage Club), and Mrs. Wauchop (in rose cendre velvet and a fur wrap), Mr. Frank Thomas, Mr. W. H. Nankervis (Savage Club), Mrs. Thomas, Mr. Loder (Athenian Club president), and Mrs. Loder, Mr. A. T. West (Athenian Club), Mr. Bruce Quin'ton (Charley's Aunt Club), Mrs. Quinton, Mr. Nolan, find other members of the executive of the latter club. The committee responsible for the excellent arrangements included Orphans Egerton Pegg (secretary), T. G. McLaren, David McLaren, H. W. Mackintosh, Delahunt, Harold Elliott, Herbert Glover, Eric North, Becker, Laurie, Johnston, A. Stark, Addison, Mcllroy, Fullerton, Marshall, and Hill The programme opened with "The King" played, as it seldom is in this country, with expression, light and shade, bringing a real meaning into the grand old tune. Mr. Harold Godier was conductor of the orchestra which played two delightful numbers, "Spirit I of Pageantry March" and "Reveries," the latter having a particular charm, and the forty players with their leader
