A penalty kick by Trapp narrowly missed the posts. From play on the half-way line Kilby broke through and set a passing rush in motion. Trapp was given a clear field, but was overtaken and thrown out against the corner flag. Ball (Hutt), making a long run, put Hutt in a good position, but the Wellington forwards, helped by R. Ball, got the side out of danger. Page broke through brilliantly in a passing movement. A good deal of indeterminate play followed. The first spell, in which honours were fairly even, ended with the score: Hutt 3, Wellington 3. The Wellington backs were rearranged in the second spell, Page becoming second five-eighth, Ball centre-three-quarter, and Fong being placed on the wing. The Hutt defence had some anxious moments when a great run by Page brought play to the line and kept it there for a time. Cresswell was caught in possession by two Hutt players, but managed to extricate himself. From play on the halfway line the Wellington forwards led a rush that took them right down to the corner flag, a twenty-five yards kick being ordered.
