SEAMAN KILLED
STRUCK ON HUTT ROAD
WALKING ON BITUMEN
While walking on the bitumen on the Hutt Road north of Ngahauranga at an early hour yesterday morning, two trimmers of the ship Pakeha were struck by a car whose driver was Mr. B. Smith, of Northland, and one of them, Roland Baines, aged' 23, a married man, of London, died from his injuries shortly afterwards. The other, Robert Downie, aged 30, a single man, also Of London, suffered head abrasions and was taken to the Wellington Hospital, where his condition this afternoon was stated to be not serious. The accident occurred at about 2.30 ajm. on the Hutt Road, about half a mile north of Ngahauranga, when Mr. Smith's car, in which were several passengers, hit both of the men practically simultaneously. The car was proceeding in a southerly direction, and the men were. stated, to be walking in the same direction and on the left side of the road. The Coroner (Mr.* E. Gilbertson, JJP.) heard evidence as to the identity of Baines at the beginning of the 1 inquest at' the Taranaki Street Police Station yesterday morning. It will be continued when Downie. has recovered sufficiently to give evidence. The Pakeha, arrived here on Saturday from Napier, and is, to leave for Lyttelton tomorrow night. .
