There -ivas> a large gathering to witness i the Wellington Club's five miles handicap ] for the Old Boys' Memorial Shield at £ Brooklyn. Officials for the day were:— , Judges and timekeepers, Messrs. S. Hit- i liker and C. Willis; liandicapper, Mr. W. * Wheelan; starter, Mr. T. Farrington; f trail-layers, Messrs. K.- Ward and G. Ha"- . gerty. The trail started at the corner \ of Taft Street and went along Morning- f ton Koad to the Ridgeway, and then over ] the hills to Severn Street, down Severn ] Street to Happy Valley Koad, and then up the Valley Road to finish at Taft Street. Sixteen members faced the starter McMahon, the limit man, started off at a good pace, but was overhauled in the first half-mile by Drawbridge and Barnhill. •At the mile post Raven and McAuley displaced Drawbridge and Barnhill, who had strayed off the course a little. With two miles completed Spence ■was in the lead. At this stage the backmarkers started to put in an appearance. At Severn Street, with half-the distance gone, McCouchie and W. Allen went to - the front. ' McConchie led oa to Happy Valley Road by 50 yards. Nest came Allen and McAuley, closely followed by Mulcahy, O'Brien, MeKinuon, Allen, and Raven. Up the Valley Road Mulcahy set out to overhaul McConchie and succeeded. He beat McConchie by about ldb yards. JMcKinnon was 50 yards away third.
