MR. HUGH GILLIES

The death df Mr.5 Hugh Gillies, occurred at his home, Bangitikei Line, on Saturday evening at the age of 82 years. The late Mr. Gillies was borii at .'' Otaria,'' Martinborough, "Wairarapa, Tv 1852, His eaylyjonthTvas spent in the district, and on . reaching man's estate he -was employed as a farni manager by the■ late .-Mr. Charles Robert Bidwill. This occupation'ho carried on for some time, and lie then- joined "up with the Gear, Meat Company, for whom Ihe acted •as buy or. Ho 'took up : his residenco at Otaki, and subsequently at IFpxtoii and Palmerstpn" iNorth, and finally on Baugitikei Line, retiring 15 years ago. • All his life Mr. Gillies' mani; fdsted a great love for horses, and. his connection with .the Manawatu Eaeing Club' dated alroost from-its formation. He also served as president, and was known throughout New Zealand as a first-class judge of'horses and'cattle.; He wasialso a member of the.Masonic jOrder and a member, of the Manawatu Club and similar institutions 'in Wellington- and WanganuL The late Mr. Gillies leaves a widow and two children,- Mr. -W.
