KIT FOR RUSSIAN TRAVEL
• Advice to those who propose to visit or reside in Soviet Eussia in tho near future is contained in a book by an American writer, which is now being sold by Intourist, the official Soviet travel agency in Britain, with the full approval of tho Eussian Government, says the London1, "Morning , Post." Under the naive title, "Are You Going to Eussia?" Mr. Lars Koeu, tho author, has prepared a helpful guido to that country, describing the special conditions which the visitor.will encounter. The book has been written, it should bo noted, sympathetically from the Russian point of view by a maa who has travelled widely in Eussia himself, and who now wishes, in his own words, "to present a specific and nncoloured picture of; what it means to travel or live ana work in the Soviet Union."
Writing on the special equipment necessary, he states: "A few yards' of mosquito netting will prove priceless; flies are plentiful and window screens unknown. Take whatever you find most
effective againsj, bed-bugs, fleas, and Hce, as there is a strong probability of encountering them in your living quarters, in trains, and in, public places generally. All of those are annoying, but lice, being carriers of typhus, are a positive danger. A mouse trap would not conic amiss,?' • The traveller is recommended to take with him, among other things, maphth alene or moth-balls, a tin of insect powder, and some disinfectant. On' the question of food, Mr.' Moen writes of the restaurants: "The food is pretty mediocre on the whole, and you will eat ip those : restaurants more V from necessity than as an epicurean joy." As to fish: "Truth compels me to be rather more pessimistic.... Experiment with fish cautiously." The author mentions that the quantity of roughage intho diet, and particularly in the black bread, may cause serious diarrhoea. As a general stomach conditioner to be included in the medical kit, ho recommends a prescription.
