A PROMOTER'S SELECTION
Jack Curley, America 's foremost sports promoter, was recently the guest of honour at a function at which, about 700 people, representing the leaders of the Turf, theatre, politics, boxing, and .wrestling, met to do honour to him on the completion of his forty years of service'in furnishing sports entertainment to the public. When 'tho time came for Curley" to speak .he was too over; come to do more than stammer a few words, but the following is an extract from the speech. which he had prepared:— "Delving into the past, I select Bob Fitzsimmons and Peter Maher as-the hardest hitters of modern boxing; Jim Corbett as the cleverest fighter of alii time; Jimmy Barry, the greatest cham- j pion, pound for pound; John, L. Sullivan, the champion of champions, the most popular fighter who ever lived, and the man who made:boxing popular in America; George Hackenschmidt, the-greatest wrestler of all time; and Tommy Ryan, the greatest fighter of his weight the world lias ever seen." \ ■
