SCHOOL CLEANING

(To the Editor.)

...Sir,—l feel sure that the general procedure regarding:'the Cleaning of city schools, is upon the. same lines as in' TeAro Schools. Our three school buildings are cleaned three times a year, during the term holidays; floors are thoroughly cleaned and.: all"plain desks', etc., are also scrubbed; varnished desks and chairs are well washed. The ordinary, routine of: daily' cleaning includes thorough sweeping" and 'dusting, the disposal of all rubbish; the cleaning of; all lavatories daily,* with, a special weekly cleaning; all hand basins and disposal of, any rubbish about the playground.' ' In' winter all fireplaces (where they: exist), are cleaned daily, fires laid, and ashes disposed o£ .Furnaces ■ (central heating) are lit sufficiently early to ensure a warm school, and furnace rooms , are kept clean. Windows are cleaned about once a year apart from the school cleaners, who hose them down outside as required and try to keep them clean inside. . ; Under existing circumstances our schools are kept remarkably clean, and the school committees' grievance is that they are not able to. reasonably compensate the cleaners for the work done. TeAro School Committee finished the year, after spending all the capitation moneys received and £60, for tennis rents) with a balance of £2,' which I think will be more than is shown by most city Schools, who year by year have/had to draw upon the children's funds anything -up to £60 or £80 in order to balance accounts . for audit. In conclusion, our schools are open for inspection at-any time to ttibse citizens ,who are interested in the cleanliness of schools.—l am, etc., f>. L. HENNESSEY, / Te Aro; Schools Chairman. ■ 2- - ■■■■. .■.-.-■• ■
