FIRST MATCHES

SEASON UNDER WAY

(By "King.")

The .first games in the Wellington Basketball- 'Association's competitions were played on Saturday and, as was to be expected, the standard of play Has varied. Many of the players were by no means fit enough to maintain'the speed necessavy, and gave evidence of the necessity for training before matches commence. " The new Hataitai courts were used for championship competition games for the first time, and, proved very fast for play. One or two. minor accidents brought Home very forcibly the^urgent necessity for some kind of dressing accommodation in which injured players may be kept. warm. The fact, too, that the players' coats, shoes, etc., have to be left lying on the , ground, - even in showery weather, is: one; more factor in favour •of ■'•.immediate provision of shelter. - ; .;'■/;. '' ' : ' '■ Senior. A Matches. Kia Toa, last year's senior B champions, were unfortunate in that their first engagement in the senior A grade was against Wellington East Old Girls I, the champion team for some 3'ears past. Despite this, and the fact that they lacked two of their forwards of last year, Kia Toa worked, hard and strenuously against their more experienced adversaries. Wellington East again showed speed both on attack and defence, and with an unaltered team except for the addition of I. Small in the forward third. They will prove a formidbale team to defeat this season. M. Parker, L. Sturroek, and K. White again proved that ability to keep their forwards well supplied, while the College's strong defence gave few opportunities for Kia Toa to score. After pneor. two matches, Kia- Toa can be -expected"to ;settle down, and; may yet prove* themselves/against,some of the strorigervfX teams—they certainly have the material-arid the -keenness. Wellington East scored 21 goals to Kia Tote's^ 5: |i; Miss. Armstrong refereed. Tije:;regradedl'uripr team fully extended' Wesley/one of the strongest teams in the senior grade, being beaten by 15 goals to 12. Neither team was very efficient in brisk handling of the bill, and although play was fast and even, both showed the beginning-of-season fumbling and a slackness in taking possession. M. Fraser, late of Haeremai, worked in well with K. Norris and J. Pinhey in defence, and her quickness in saving from the Wesley pass from centre redirected play on numerous occasions. Miss Beales controlled the ; game. /University were unfortunate -that, throughv some- misunderstanding^ they had to take the field with only seven players, which meant that both forward and defence thirds had to play one short. The fact that Wellington East II were able to score" only IS goals to University's 16 gives some idea of the fine work done by the two defence players aad the-two forwards. Against any team two short is a big handicap, and it was even more so for the students when they were playing Wellington East 11, who can be relied on to provide strong opposition at any time. Throughout the game playing was fast, speedy passing by both sides taking the ball swiftly from end to,end. Wellington East II showed that they possess a a: : exceptionally strong centre, and only the sterling work of the University defence prevented the College from scoring more heavily. Miss Wharton was. the referee. In a good passing game) in which the losers lacked only the ability to finish off, good attacking movements, Kia Ora defeated Technical Old Girls by 17 goals to 5. In the first half Kia Ora were disallowed two goals through one-of the'non-scoring forwards, a newcomer to senior grade, not realising the penalty for having her foot on the line while her team-mate was shooting at goal—a point which every forward would do well to remember. M. Schaab and J. Buck fielded well in the forward third, but ..lacked accuracy in, shooting. Tec'hriicailost many passes through the ball being thrown too hard and fast, resulting in the receiver being unable to grip it. Mrs. Granger refereed. Executive Meeting. . ( The fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Wellington Basketball Association .was held on Monday night. Miss M. E. Armstrong presided. Present were Mesdam'es E. M. Smith, H. D. Muir, A.; Muir, Misses Bell, P. Plen O. Lawlor, O. Wharton, M. Beeles, A. Hennessey, G. Edwards, L. Sturroek, M. . Simmons, and Miss White (Hutt Valley Sub-association). Miss- - Armstrong introduced Miss White 'to the meeting, and said that she ( was representing the Hutt Valley Sub-association on , the Wellington Executive. . ; A letter from the Y.W.C.A. asking for the assistance of the association -was discussed and it was decided that if the Y.W.C.A. could, arrange for an evening at the Winter Show Building, the association would organise a tournament in aid of their effort. Mrs. H. D. Muir (convener), Mrs. A. Muir, Misses Sturroek, Wharton, Beeles, Flen, and Hennessey were appointed a committee. The sample of blazer material submitted by the secretary was approved and the design adopted as the official "Wellington Basketball Association blazer. The president reported that arrangements had been made for a committee from_ the executive to meet the North Wellington Association committee with regard to their affiliation as a subassociation, on Saturday next at Plimmerton. _It was agreed to adopt the suggestion from the St. John Ambulance officials that referees be asked to give three sharp whistles when in need of medical assistance. The lack of shelter at Hataitai, particularly with regard to injured players was discussed, and it. was decided that the Grounds Committee endeavour to interview the Eeserves Committee, with a view to having something done in this matter. It was decided to obtain "nets foi: all goal-posts at Hataitai. Miss Bell was authorised to forward to the Hutt secretary, any correspondence dealing with Hutt matters. Discussions of means to raise money for representative teams' expenses resulted in the following suggestions being adopted:—l: That Miss Sturroek be asked to organise a table tennis tournament; 2: That Senior A, B, 3rd, and 4th grades be levied 6d per player' this amount to go towards the expenses of teams from these grades; 3: That inquiries be made as to the possibility of charging for admission at the Mount Cook grounds, the takings to go towards the funds.
