UPPER HUTT WOMEN'S
INSTITUTE
The May meeting of the Upper Hutt Women's lustltuto was held recently, when there was a vei'.y largo attendance, and the president, Mrs. S. D. Rogers, on behalf of tha members of the institute, welcomed thirteen new members. A request was made for preserves, pickles, and empty jars to bo sent to people in the JPahiatua district who had suffered from the. effects of tho last scvero earthquake. Mrs. Tomlin gave a delightful rendering of Chopin's "Polonaise in A," with a preliminary explanation of that form of dance- Miss Caskey, with the help of a squad of small girls, gave an interesting demonstration of folk dancing, which she accompanied with a short address. A bouquet, made of vegetables, was the competition for the afternoon. This was keenly contested and many artistic attempts were the result. The winners'were Mrs. Allen, Ist; and Mrs. Wale, 2nd. Commurnity singing and dancing were 6ajojjed, and afternoon tea was provided by; the hostesses, Mesdames Oliff, Hay, S. Braid, Humphreys, Simpson, and Masses Dixpn, V. Keys, and Cummings. A very enjoyable afternoon terminate eel with the singing of the National Anthem.
