An unpopular reception -was accorded Mr. F. Lye, M.P. for Waikato, when he joined in the welcome to Mr. Coates before the Minister started speaking in the Strand Theatre, Morrinsville, on Tuesday evening (reports the "Waikato Times"). Mr. Lye was literallyhowled down and had to resume his seat with the house virtually in an uproar. Mr. Lye waitnly eulogised the personal qualities of the Minister of Finance. Although he had formerly opposed him, he said, he now recognised him as a man of undoubted courage, capacity, and ability- • . "You will see in good time the outcome of his good work for New Zealand," added Mr. Lye. ' A voice: Too right, we will. Mr. Lye went on to -. refer to the achievements of the Government,' including the conversion loan, tho relief of local body indebtedness, and the reduction in rent and interest. At this stage there was a chorus of cat-calls and boos from many parts of the hall, coupled with cries of "Sit down!" "You can't scare me," Mr. Lye smiled back. ' When the pandemonium had died s down Mr. Lye claimed that the raising of the exchange rate had been in the best interests of the producer. (Commotion.) "This Government will do all possible to, correct the fall in the price level and to keep down overhead costs," ho added. A storm of interjections and jeers made further speech impossible, and Mr. Lye resumed his seat.
