BIRDS FLYING HIGH
FEW LIMITS SHOT

PALMERSTON N., This Day
Generally speaking, poor' bags were secured at the opening of the shooting season, in- the Manawatu district.
At; Hunia Lake; where the GovernorGeneral was among the sportsmen, luck was out.
The following '' bags'' are reported
Foxton-Himatangi district: No. 2 lake,; 7 guns, 30 ducks; No. 3 lake, 4 guns,' 22 ducks; No. 4 lake, 4 guns, 24 ducks; Kopafcara, 13 guns, 50 ducks; Hunia, 10 guns, 30 ducks; Pukepukeilake, 13 guns, 35 ducks.
Manawatu.—Rangiotu lake, 6 guns, 120 ducks,(two,days, limit both days); James lake, 3 guns,.2l ducks; Keeble's lake, 2 guns, 13 ..ducks, .
Rangitikei district.—Smith's lake, 6 guns, 60 ducks; Whittington's lake, 7 guns, 40 ducksj Round's Bush, 3 guns, 30 ducks; Solan's lake, 3 guns, 17 ducks; Mount lake, 2 guns, 20 ducks; Lake Alice, 6 guns, 20 ducks; Nursery lake, 8 guns, 25 ducks. ,
The opening day was too fine for successful shooting, the ducks flying high. One party had more luck in the search for pheasants, and secured the limit of six cock birds —two birds per gun. Shortlybefore the opening of the season there was a big flock of ducks numbering about 2000 on the river at Tolomaruj but they departed when the guns began to speak, only a few being shot.
