President Roosevelt's controlled inflation programme started its way through Congress today with the endorsement of the Senate Banking Committee. < , As conflict stirred in the Senate, President' Roosevelt directed that the controlled legislation should be hurried to enactment with the passage of the Farm Bill. The debate will be shut off, if necessary, to kill a "filibuster" (stonewall). ,'•'.' ' An amendment to put a check on inflation was offered by Senator McAdoo (Democrat). ■ Senator Reed (Republican) said: "Inflation is a process by which Governments throw off responsibility and go on a jamboree."
