STIPENDIARY CONTROL
FORM OF THE SMUGGLER
The principal value of stipendiary control consists in the fact that it is continuous from meeting to meeting, and changing the officials in charge in connection with fixtures in the same district and closely following each other to -a very great extent nullifies their knowledge of form, comments the Dunedin writer, "Sentinel." Under such circumstances an official cannot obtain the necessary knowledge to keep in touch with the fprm.^ When The Smuggler won the. Riverton Gold Cup last Saturday with a great deal in hand and really full o£ running, there was a great deal of talk about the very poor, display he had made a week earlier in the Otautau Cup. There was a lot of comment,. but officially- nothing was done, although the difference in the form was such as could not escape those who had been present at both meetings. No doubt the stable connected with The Smuggler would have welcomed a. question on the matter and have supplied an acceptable explanation, but they were not granted the opportunity: The Smuggler was turned out particularly fit and well for the Riverton Cup, and was a credit to his trainer, but everyone present at Otautau and" Riverton marvelled at the wonderful improvement made by the Balboa gelding during a few days.
