VALUE OF DESTROYERS

The utility of the destroyer in future warfare is emphasised, by Captain Lionel Dawson in "Flotillas: a HardLying Story" (Rich and Cowan). Ho also voices strong opinions on presentday methods of early training and subsequent employment of the Navy's personnel. In this book, which is humorously illustrated and which contains some excellent photographs, an intimate picture is drawn of life behind the scones in: the Navy, Fresh and interesting light is thrown upon such well-known incidents as the "paintwork is more important than gunnery" disagreement between the late Lord Charles Beresfordand Sir Percy Scott, and the sinking of the TJ29 during the war by H.M.B. Dreadnought. Captain Dawson takes us from the beginning of the present century to the end of the war and describes in a refreshingly straightforward style : the duties, dangers, and relaxations of the average officer in the Navy, in a way that will bo new to tho general public. The author, who joined 'the Britannia some thirty years ago, commanded torpedo craft during the war. A foreword is contributed by Sir Eoger Keyei, Admiral of the Fleet.
