Preston, ground engineer of the Wairarapa-Ruahine Aero Club, left Akitio for Dannovirke, the former flying a privately-owned machine and the latter the Wairarapa Club's aeroplane. The journey to Dannevirke usually occupies 20 minutes, but they encountered heavy westerly winds and ■ rain squalls, and darkness came on quickly, and the machines separated.
