ORCHARD SPRAYS
VALUABLE WORK DONE
GREAT SAVING EXPECTED
• (Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMERSTON ,N., This Day. Investigations conducted by the Plant Research Station, Palmerston North, during the last year or two into the efficacy of orchard sprays, are attracting world-wide interest, if one can judge by the numerous requests that have been received for literature on the question. Inquiries have come from America, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Algeria, Japan, the Philippine Islands, and elsewhere, and testify to the valuable nature of the work that has been carried out by the station. The investigators have provided or•cha'rdists with units of measurement by which they can judge the merits of any particular spray. A considerable amount of work was entailed in completing the investigations, which have revolutionised tho spray industry, in that it was demonstrated that many of the Jsprays in use prior to the investigations were practically, if not entirely, worthless. The saving to the fruit industry of the Dominion by the adoption ,of the new methods will amount .to £10,000' a year in materials alone. The indirect benefits are difficult to assess, but, will be worth thousands of pounds] because orchardists will now be sure of getting complete control of diseases and pests.
At the recent meeting of tho Wellington Centre of the Bed Cross Society the Lower Hutt branch reported a large number of applicants for distress relief. Relief work was continuing in co-operation with the Mayor's Eelief Committee, and there was no overlapping. A ball has been arranged to take place on May, 22 to r^isgjjujidft-&£ i jfe§-ferasoh, ' .
