The close .of the Canadian markets on Thursday brought an optimistic picture, with rises right down the line, and not a thing to discredit the general opinion in financial and industrial circles that Canada will be the gainer by the .United States gold action. Montreal reported wide gains in stocks, though the market closed below the day's top prices. In Toronto the general list closed • near the day's top prices after the most exciting day in four years. In Montreal the pound sterling pursued an upward course all day, closing at 4 dollars 39| cents.' On Wednesday it opened at 4 dollars 41J cents, and on Thursday climbed gradually to 4 'dollars 45 centa.
